If anyone sounds certain about what is going on in Irish society and politics these days, take their views with a muckspreader-full of salt. Let’s start by saying that it’s perfectly possible the protests the country has seen over the past two weeks were a flash in the pan. Societies sometimes experience sudden protest movements, only for them to blow over quickly. UK-wide riots in the summer of 2011 are but one example. Whether that happens or not, the events of the past 11 days have revealed a high level of discontent in at least some sections of the population.…
