Great art has often been born out of societal catastrophes. Take Titian’s magnificent Pietà for example. It was one of the last paintings he made before his death during Venice’s plague in 1576. Edvard Munch survived the 1918 flu epidemic and painted Self-Portrait After the Spanish Flu a year later, while Picasso’s Guernica, painted in 1937, memorialised the victims of the Spanish civil war.
