It has been a discouraging few weeks for proponents of a sane economic strategy. The Government has discovered €750 million in hidden national resources to subsidise energy imports over the next four months, costing the Exchequer almost €200 million per month, with hints of more to come. The world price of oil, hitherto deemed beyond the control of the Irish government, has miraculously been tamed.
