There are rules in most industries to prevent discrimination. Some health insurance policies include maternity services on men’s policies to avoid penalising women of child-bearing age. The Equality Act 2010 prevents providers insurers from discriminating on the basis of disability or age – both are linked to risk assessments and there are very limited exceptions which place the burden on the insurance company to defend. Ultimately, those exceptions are based on the applicant presenting a much higher risk.
